Believe or Give Up

Ozil
Ozil has endured a very difficult run as a gunner. His head nearly fell off during Arsenals loss to Bayern as he kept shaking it in regret over the missed penalty. The question now is, should the arsenal fans keep faith with the German or just give up.

Mesut began his career in London with a bang. He was picking up assists like a drunk driver picks up speeding tickets on a ‘good’ night. He was scoring too… but suddenly the form dimmed. He crowned his frustrating season so far with the display against Bayern.

Ozil might not be as unrelenting as Flamini but he knows how to part the red sea with his passes and creative play. If there is one player that needs a lot of encouragement right now from the fans its OZIL because he has the quality to deliver a piece of silverware to arsenal’s cockroach and cobweb ridden trophy cabinet.

Rooney
Rooooooooney! Rooooooooney! Rooooooooney! will be heard at the Theatre of Dreams at least for the next four years. The forward just penned a  £300,000  a WEEK! deal. For a player who has expressed his desire to leave the club twice to commit to see off his career there is interesting. Well, of course with the right amount of zeros behind the right number commitments could change.
However, Rooney’s change of heart could also be attributed to the fact that Moyes has continuously played Rooney at his preferred No. 10 role. But with players like Juan Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj and even Van persie all capable of playing the same role how long will that preference last without results?

Furthermore, considering the fact that Man. Utd haven’t had the best of  seasons, Rooney’s 9  goals and 9 assists is good but is it worth  £62m over four years? Others might point to his work rate, long contribution to the club and his ability to produce the extraordinary when needed but even at that you cannot buy a car at its old price simply because it used to be great.
The question still remains should the fans continue believing?

Giroud

First things first, Giroud owes all Arsenal fans and I. Okay!!! Lemme explain… He owes Arsenal fans after all the faith they had in him to fill Robin Van persie’s shoes he has failed to do that. He owes me too because in an attempt to score the goal that Giroud missed I broke my glass table. But look at the bright side I scored he didn’t.

Giroud has been the subject of a lot of heated arguments that I have had lately. First the fact that he seems to have mastered the art of shooting around the post. If there is one player that deserves a lot of blame for Arsenals mishap its Giroud. With the amount of chances he misses per game you wonder if other premier league clubs have him on payroll.

Finally, not forgetting Oliviers recent twitter confessions. That one I can’t hold him entirely responsible, I mean have you seen the pics of the model????? O’Lawd!!!  At least he didn’t commit ‘adultery’. Probably arsenal should put up pictures of beautiful models behind their opponents net then may be Giroud would rediscover his ‘shooting boots’.

Top Premier league Buys

As we gradually head to the end of the transfer window let’s take a look at some of the great signings that the premier league has seen in recent years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Arriving at Manchester United when the fans where expecting Alan Shearer, the baby-faced assassin had a lot to do to prove himself. However, 126 goals later including the famous Champions League winner against Bayern Munich, I guess it’s fair to say that the Norwegian striker gave a great introduction of himself.

Patrick Viera
For just £3.5m the French man was one of the best buys of The Professors prolific coaching career. From playing reserve football at San Siro to becoming one of Arsenal’s all-time greats with four FA Cups and Three Premier League titles.

Van Persie
I was asked recently what it took United to win the Premier League last season and I said it took a lot of brain washing from Sir Alex and £22.5m.
Very few had predicted that the forward would end up at the Theatre of Dreams, yet after 30 goals in only 48 matches in his debut campaign in the north-west, the Scot’s move for RvP was rightly considered to be the catalyst behind United retaining the Premier League that season.

Peter Schmeichel
Signed from Danish side Brondby in 1991 for just £505,000, the blond keeper went on to play 393 matches for the Red Devils in the following eight years, winning five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League in the process.
The great Dane can rightfully lay claim to be the club’s greatest-ever goalkeeper, with manager Alex Ferguson subsequently describing Schmeichel's capture as "the bargain of the century."

Gianfranco Zola
For some still-unfathomable reason, Parma head coach Carlo Ancelotti did not rate the little Italian during their brief time working together at Emilia–Romagna in 1996, probably because he kept on insisting on utilising the playmaker as a left winger.
However, Chelsea were only too happy to take the attacking genius off the Serie A outfit’s hands in November 1996 for just £4.5m, with Zola having since gone on to be voted the Blues’ greatest-ever player by the club’s fans in 2003.

Mascherano
In the January transfer window of 2007, Reds' manager Rafa Benitez pulled off a major coup by luring the Argentina international from Upton Park to Anfield, initially on loan, before the player then agreed a four-year deal with the Merseyside giants a year later.
The total cost of the transfer, including the holding midfielder’s salary, was just £18.6m. When you consider this was the captain of the Argentina national team, it was quite some achievement by the Reds.

Ronaldo

Everyone knows the story by now of how a young Ronaldo caught the eye of United’s players during a pre-season friendly in Lisbon in the summer of 2003, with the likes of Ryan Giggs then urging manager Alex Ferguson to move fast and sign up the young Portuguese.
Luckily for the Scot, United acted with haste and beat rivals Arsenal to the wide man’s signature, with Ronaldo arriving at Old Trafford for a fee of just €15m later that summer. Six years later, he was sold on to Real Madrid for a world-record £80m.

Bergkamp
Back in 1995, big-name players from the continent just did not sign for Premier League clubs, so Arsenal’s capture of the Oranje forward in June of that year was a major coup for the Gunners.
Do not forget either that this was still the pre-Arsene Wenger era at Highbury, with Bruce Rioch at the helm in North London at the time, making it an even bigger accomplishment by the club.
And to think that the Nerazzurri were happy to let Bergkamp depart the San Siro because they had Maurizio Ganz waiting in the wings...

Makelele
The French water carrier helped los Blancos win everything there was to during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, there was one major problem and that was that Makelele’s face was just not recognisable enough to sell Madrid shirts around the world.
As a result, club president Florentino Perez offloaded the holding midfielder to Chelsea in the summer of 2003 for just £16.8m, sending the player on his way with these parting words:
We will not miss Makelele. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways.
He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makelele to be forgotten.
Madrid have failed to win the UEFA Champions League in the 11 years since Makelele’s departure, while at Stamford Bridge the defensive midfielder continued his reputation as the best player in his position on Planet Football.

Cantona
This was a move that happened by accident when Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson made an inquiry about United full-back Denis Irwin, only for his opposite number at the time, Alex Ferguson, then to ask whether the Frenchman was available.
To Fergie’s great surprise, United’s arch-rivals were indeed happy to let the mercurial forward move to Old Trafford, with Cantona signing for the Red Devils for just £1.2 million on Nov. 26, 1992.
And the rest, as they say, is history..

Lets see who makes the buy of the season this January. Until next time guys stay true to the Beautiful Game.

Chosen to take united up or down?

How is it going people, don’t you just love Mondays? I don’t! So let's just say we are already looking forward to Friday. As always, we had good football but the results were not good for some of us. lets just say there are questions to the chosen one story.

At the end of the premiership 2012/2013, two key decisions were made...after a wonderful 26 years in steering the Manchester United ship, the captain was stepping down and as the captain steps down it is only right that he would name the next captain. The long and short of the story was that Sir Alex chose David Moyes to be the next manager of united. Who are we to question that choice especially from a man that had given the fans so much joy, so many trophies...He had picked the man he thought was right for United. The chosen one he was named.

In that same period, a man was returning from his harsh but slightly successful time in Spain, the special one returned to the bridge and he put in a name request..calling himself, the happy one. Now in this current time, we question two decisions, the decision made by sir Alex and the decision made by Roman Abramovich...Is the happy one happy? Are his fans happy? And is the chosen one confused? I ask if he is confused because his fans do not know if he was chosen to take united up or to take united down.

This weekend was the 2nd meeting between the chosen one and the happy one and it was a no brainy who would emerge as winners. United season has gone from bad to badder than bad (forgive my grammar) and Chelsea, even if they don't play the best football have stuck in there, getting the results they need and that just shows the calibre of both managers. I watched the game and I will tell you 5 things united have lost with the appointment of the chosen one..

Alex Ferguson…

Its pretty obvious but filling sir Alex’s shoes was always going to be difficult especially after his success for United over the years. David Moyes ignored Fergusons advice about not getting rid of the back room staff and that was his first mistake; imagine if you are taking over a successful company like Samsung, would you get rid of the entire staff? Simply because you want to do it your way.

Fear Factor…

Seeing that your next opponents would be Manchester united, a lot of teams had already lost the games in their heads because whoever wore the united shirt had nothing but victory in their minds, I remind people that Fergusson won the league with players like Darren Gibson. and with that name enough said. United has become yet another fixture for a lot of teams especially as they have lost four home games in the league this season

No plan B or C…

David Moyes has stuck to his 4-4-2 formation and never changes it regardless of the situation on the pitch. You can name a David Moyes team a week before the game and you may not get the players playing but you will know how the position of each player would be on the day. He has refused to give the likes of Zaha a chance and these days,United goes 1-0 down, the game is as good as over unlike before.

No motivation…

Although I think the responsibility or a lot of the responsibility goes on the players, the manager is still accountable for whatever happens as he selects these players. There is no zeal or motivation from the players which leaves us to believe that the Manchester united players are not playing for the manager; After being used to a system that has been successful, there is certainly something Moyes is doing or not doing that makes the players not willing to play for him. and once that happens it is like trying to convince a cat that dogs are cleaner.

Quality…

As all fingers are being pointed at David Moyes, it might be fair to say that two of his key players in Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney have been injured hence taking a major chunk in the quality of the united squad. There is no magic any more in the midfield as nobody is able to control the tempo of the game like Paul Scholes used too. David Moyes was chosen way before the Transfer window opened and yet failed to make any major signings hence questioning his eye for quality.

David moyes is a good manager as he showed at Everton but is Manchester united too big a club for him?Its been dark days for the united faithful, its January and still no buys to improve the squad. There is a big risk of loosing out on the top 4 and no champions league. Its a funny situation as the downfall of Man united is applauded by many after their domination over the years but the United supporters should take pride in the fact that it shows how great they are. Or should we say how great they once were.

What If (1)

What if

”What if” is a phrase that is usually associated with regret and second thoughts mostly from missed opportunities. You know that feeling you have when you fail to talk to that beautiful girl, when you oversleep and go late to work as a result, when you go in for that test without studying etc. In this article we will be taking a look at the “what if’s” of this week.

Mourinho/Moyes

What if Manchester United opted for José Mourinho rather than David Moyes. I know for sure that most Manchester United fans have had this thought in their heart. Even you…Yes You! I mean Manchester United had the opportunity to snatch up the Special One and Transform him into the Chosen One before Chelsea did. But Sir Alex opted for his fellow Scottish man. The transition from Sir Alex has been anything but smooth. Three successive defeats at the turn of the year have transformed an already tough situation into a crisis. A friend of mine likened it to riding a formula 1 car on an uneven road. Surely the trip will be bumpy. With the Special one on the verge of his 100th win one cannot but wonder “what if” he was the replacement for Sir Alex. Would united be 7th on the league?

January Transfer Window or Not

”The Professor” a special title reserved for the ever pragmatic and wise Mr Wenger said this week what he has continued to say for a very long time that the January transfer window should be scrapped (maybe replaced with a  Door). Arsene said the window was “unfair” and “Either you leave it completely open the whole year or you close it completely for the whole year,”  I know you are probably thinking “Mr Wenger stop being cheap and spend some money”. Before you crucify The Professor let’s look at his logic. “It is like running a relay, then in the middle of the relay you change your runners ”. “It gives teams a chance who are already convicted, it gives some teams hope ”.

I really think Wenger is right. The January transfer window also affects the attitude of players. Kenwyne Jones had the “balls” to send a text to Mark Hughes that he will not be available for Stokes home fixture against Liverpool simply because he thinks Everton were interested in buying him. Fair enough he has made only four premier league starts this season but you can’t help asking what if the January transfer window did not exist.

Well guys till next time ... Stay true to the Beautiful Game...

Who really is the best?

It’s Friday!!!! And quite honestly the weekend is just a mirage, barely there and then it's gone. Never never enough. However, after a long week , it's always nice to chill and relax and support your team. Nothing better than weekend football (for us football fans), this weekend promises to be a good one looking at the fixtures but this week has left me with some questions, some of which I might have answered and some that I will answer when I eventually stop thinking about what my Friday night is going to be like? Any suggestions? Well, if you are willing to help me,I would start of with just a pint and when you come up with an idea for my Friday night, 3 pints for you.

This week saw Cristiano Ronaldo crowned best footballer of 2013,finally beating  Messi (and Ribery) to it. He shed a few tears of joy(man up Ronaldo) before giving us the usual speech. When these awards come up, there are always  the usual arguments. Did he deserve it? Was he the best player in the globe and all that. And with the last 6-7 years being dominated by the short man from Argentina (Messi) and the gel-haired Portuguese (you know who)…camp Ronaldo and camp Messi were at it again.

I have done a little research in trying to pinpoint who really deserved the award, so brace yourself and try not to insult me too much.

For those of you that love your statistics do remember, statistics are like a mini skirts, reveals a lot but doesn’t show the final package.

So now I have managed to satisfy the statistic junkies (maybe, hopefully), let us begin,

Arguably….

Cristiano Ronaldo had a wonderful 2013 with goals and was by far the most influential player for club and country. His goal record for the year was second to none and he was responsible for Portugal’s qualification for the world cup ensuring that Portugal maintained their record of always qualifying for all major tournaments. He equalled Pauleta’s goal scoring record for his country, scoring 47 goals in 109 appearances but with all this, he has nothing to show for it. He won no trophies and his performances in terms of play can be argued with the other two players in mention. And before you tell me about his goals, Ruud Van Nisteroy scored a lot of goals but his in play game was never mentioned.

Ribery on the other hand was the most influential player for his club (Robben fans may disagree) and country. He helped France qualify for the world cup finals and won every club competition Bayern Munich played in. It can also be said that Ronaldo and Messi both play as top men making the sole concentration of their teams, all supply end up on their feet where Ribery who is a wide man does a lot more defending, more dribbles(as the stats will show) and definitely his trophies should count for something or maybe not....

Messi finished 2013 with one trophy, helped Argentina qualify for the World Cup, got kicked out of the Champions league by the Bayern, whom eventually won the tournament. He was hit with loads of injuries but still stood out as the star man for Barcelona by match winning performances (e.g. 2nd leg against AC Milan). He still has the best chance conversion rate in Europe.

If only…

If Messi wasn’t injured and went toe to toe with Ronaldo and Ribery in terms of games played, would he have been the runner up?
If Ribery with all his trophies had scored the winner in the champions league, would it have gotten him more votes? or if the votes are solely on 2013 as they say, shouldn’t he be crowned world best player?
If Ronaldo didn’t outshine Zlatan in the play off and Messi wasn’t injured, would he have been crowned worlds best player?

And if my aunty was male, she would be my uncle right?

Personally…

I think Ronaldo deserves to win it, regardless of lack of trophies. His performances over the past couple of years have been outstanding. He has remained a world class player proving that he is way beyond just being on form. In the past couple of years where he has finished as a runner up to Messi, his consistency, high class performances sets him apart from the rest, somewhat superhuman. And Messi is as close to super human as it gets.

Ribery has been unlucky to have such a wonderful year in the same era as Messi and Ronaldo, he did win every competition he played in but even that wasn’t good enough to out class Ronaldo and Messi. If he can keep up the performance, the pendulum will eventually swing his way.

Messi, He was injured….

Well I hope somebody has made up their mind what is going on tonight because I am already on my third pint!!! Enjoy the weekend football coming up people. I sure will....

Winners and Come Back Kings

Yaya the king of Africa as Ronaldo rules the world.

Welcome to the new year when expectations are very high and when we plan how to achieve more than we achieved in the past...For footballers it’s a winner takes all time especially when it comes to awarding the best of the best...

Days before the CAF award, I got to know that it will be held in Lagos which suggests that the winner should be MIKEL OBI...well that is according to some very biased Nigerians......I couldn't believed the argument that Mikel is a better player and won more trophies than Yaya Toure.....Yes he won more trophies than Toure in the past year but I can never be convinced that Mikel is a better player than Toure unless Toure retires when  Mikel is still playing and that leads me to  Drogba......Double D as he is fondly called by Chelsea fans was once a great in Africa but to finish 3rd in the CAF awards speaks poor of African football.....we need top players to emerge A.S.A.P from Africa o....lest I forget Congrats to YAYA TOURE and also to C. RONALDO who beat Messi and Frank Ribery to be named the best player in the world on Monday while FIFA pro XI proves once again how stupid the voters are....more on that later on.

Mr Champions League

As the only player to have won the champions League with three different clubs, Clarence Seedorf is a name well known to football fans. Some 20years back, he never imagined he could be on the verge of becoming the next Milan boss but fast forward two decades later and a stunning playing career, Seedorf is about to enter the Managerial hot seat... This however hasn't gone down well with some top names and managers who believe that his lack of experience of coaching any level of football will see him struggle at Milan. A good horse doesn't always make a good jockey it seems - former players like Maradona, Shearer, Paul Ince, Ruud Gullit- can testify but Seedorf seems to have an advantage of having a flawless reputation when he was at Milan though there is no guarantee that Seedorf will become a success as an appointment of an unproven and inexperienced coach always remain a risk. So its now up to him to show that a good horse can turn out to be a good jockey....Sir Ferguson proved it whispers a Man united fan.

Forgotten Man

Arsenal's midfield has been superb so far this season with the likes of Ramsey, Cazorla and Ozil dictating the play. However, there is one man everyone has forgotten about and that man is Abou Diaby. But this time, to get him fit for the second part of the season the Arsenal medical staff have pulled out all the stops by literally wrappiing him up in cotton wool (well bubble wrap). With Arsene Wenger being renowned for his innovative ideas, many of which have changed English football forever, it’s only a matter of time before it catches on...I just hope they have enough bubble wrap for Andy Carroll......
